Official Policy on Artificial Intelligence Content

The official policy on AI generated content

I am a technologist.  I've always been fascinated by the idea of Artificial Intelligence.  The idea that a computer will be able to converse with me, and do things I just couldn't do, I was intrigued.

But I also know that AI is going to have limits.  Limits that show it just isn't ready for creative work.  I've seen these limits.  I pushed some story that I wrote into ChatGPT and told it to create a Fate Core session with pre-gen characters.  The session was short, and completely ignored many of the word building rules that I considered important.  I didn't even try to run it.  I deleted the conversation.

Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro are in some controversy with using AI in some of their products.  Even paying an artist to create art with AI.  Hollywood is currently in a striking situation with actors and writers concerning the use of AI in scripts and generating images of actors instead of paying actors and script writers.  This is unacceptable.

There are some benefits to AI.  There are many people who are alive and healthy because of diagnostic assistance from AI algorithms finding details that the human eye couldn't.  A common usage of AI is spell-checking and grammar-checking.  I don't see a problem with someone writing something and then having an AI go over it and make sure that grammar rules are being followed.  Maybe checking continuity of what you have written.

But as for writing any game content, any artwork or writing, any of that, we at Back Alley Games will not use any of that.  If a writer logs into an AI system and requests story prompts, that is something we may take into consideration.  But for the actual content, it must be generated by a human mind.  That will be our official stance on content generated by Artificial Intelligence.
